This week, DESMA Sales Engineer Robert Renfrew attended the 2026 IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) T&D Conference, one of the leading events for the electrical industry in North America. Highlighting power systems, technology, and innovative research in the field, the show floor was a great place to connect and learn about concepts driving the industry and what investing in the future looks like.

The electrical power transmission industry relies on specially equipped DESMA injection machines in the manufacture of polymer shed insulators and arresters. In this application, HCR silicone is directly bonded to a substrate such as fiberglass rods (in suspension or post insulators) or MOV blocks (in HV arresters). When finished, these critical components are used in the nation’s continually expanding high-voltage power transmission grid. In addition to injection machines, DESMA is a renowned source of expertise in the specialized tooling required for these applications, with over 40 years of experience in the market. Using our knowledge, DESMA developed techniques for “jump” molding that can adjust the overall length of the insulator, offering tremendous flexibility for production machinery. DESMA large volume FIFO injection units with integrated silicone stuffers, up to 50 liters (approximately 135 lbs), can dose these systems with limited refill frequencies, contributing to uninterrupted production cycles.

In addition, the production of elastomer high-voltage cable accessories is a complex, multi-step process that requires components to be produced from layers of insulating and conductive EPDM materials. In addition to the DESMA vertical machines, which are perfectly suited to this application, DESMA focuses on providing complete solutions for this unique market. These solutions include specially designed complex molds, cold runner systems, and integrated automation to achieve optimum product quality and efficiency in these important products.
